As Bella and Billy had gotten up after their third cup of the finest and freshest Stein coffee, Susan had poured herself another small cup for the road. That was when Bella cut her a subtle look, and Susan returned it with an imperceptible nod of her own. Looking up innocently enough, she asked, “So, with all the big questions out of the way, Mr. And Mrs.—”

Rita interrupted bringing her own porcelain cup to her mouth, “Call us Rita and Morris, my dear. You have earned it with all the great work you do.”

Susan nodded and gave a broad grin. She put her cup of coffee down on its saucer next to an oaken table. “Thank you, Rita and Morris. I guess the last question we have is what’s your affiliation with Saul Manning? He seems to be on a lot of these other invoices in your businesses.”

Billy’s face went taut, but Bella had already been watching closely for their reactions. It was the question Bella had wanted to start with. The pleasantries and the niceties wearing on Bella’s focus had managed to thwart their efforts and get them off track. This was the reason she’d brought an entire team.

Morris’s smile evaporated like the steam on his coffee. “Call Herman Redmond, Mr. Stewart,” he directed the red-bearded guard. Morris looked at Rita grimly and turned back to Bella and the team. “I think our attorney should be here for anything else, agents. He’ll be on his way shortly.”

The tension was back in the room. Morris again leaned back in his chair with his arms and legs crossed rubbing his right temple. Rita had her hands together and her head down in a slight prayer. While waiting with the concerned couple, Bella looked at the incredible frescoes on the room’s ceiling. Each was an exact recreation of the art of the famous Sistine Chapel. The brushwork and the gilding were flawless. Bella traced cherubs around various saints. She saw winged angels and possibly a devil, darting in and above as the last rays of Hawaiian sun from the window sent heavenly rays to set them alight. It was at odds with the rest of the décor in the room, but somehow it worked.

After twenty more minutes of sitting, Bella and everyone stood to stretch. Morris and Rita also stood with them, and each looked at their watches. Morris scratched the stubble on his chin. He then leaned in and whispered something to Rita before turning to face Bella, Billy, and Susan.

Morris straightened his denim shirt and pointed to the barbecue pit in the backyard. Three of his cowboys that had just walked in nodded without a word and headed to the black pit. “Well, while waiting for Herman, I suppose we should prepare a meal for all of you. It’s the polite thing to do.”

“I think we’ll come back. We’ve intruded enough on you today.” Bella nodded for Billy and Susan to pack up to leave.

Morris pointed to a massive building next door out the window.
